Where Technology Has Brought Us
Today, a deployed solder can have a two-way video conversation with their family through a handheld device. In the late 1960s, my sister wrote letters to her fiancée serving in the United States Marines on Okinawa. She would put her thoughts down on a single side of a thin sheet of paper. When complete, she would fold it, turning it into an envelope, the message on the inside, the outside ready to be addressed. By reducing the weight, she could afford to send it airmail, cutting weeks from the delivery time. It could still be weeks before getting a reply to her missive. We could only imagine what the future would hold.
